Doctors tied with North Newton

Against a backdrop of continuing beautiful clear but cool weather we welcomed North Newton to Cannington for the first time.

New fixtures are always going to be a gamble, and it was truly remarkable that this one turned out so well, the opposition being totally unknown to us.

North Newton won the toss and elected to bat. Their openers, Cook and Merchant, both quickly reached 26 and retired, as did batsman no 4, Sellick.  In between we managed a couple of minor successes, bowling the dangerous-looking Cross and running out Crowley.  Precise details are not recorded, but the opposition reached 136 for 8 in their 18 overs.

In reply, Matt Beere scored a cultured 17, while Keith Powell just prized out of his vestry, was unfortunately bowled for a duck;  Rob Adcock reached 14 with a memorable boundary, and John Ogle was able to retire on 25 having only just missed a straight 6 with his second ball.  Graham Fergusson smashed a couple of boundaries but was bowled on 19.  The momentum kept going, Andrew Jeanes pressing the accelerator at the critical time with some heroic shots including two 4’s, but alas narrowly ran himself out for 16.  Off the penultimate ball Nick Eaton and George King scrambled 4 due to a fielding mix-up, and a single from an edge off the last ball ended with the scores level.  A great finish.
