Taunton School Staff beat Doctors by 35 runs

School              170 for 5

Doctors            135 for 8

Doctors got off to a good start when Wayne Pither induced Cyril Kelly to chip a catch to Ashley Knowles at mid off but thereafter it was uphill all the way against the talented Staff batting line up. Knowles bowled tightly and Pither (1-36) was unlucky to see two further chances go begging but the rock-hard School wicket allowed the bowlers no margin for error as C.Davenport and School old boy Andrew Jeanes played quality shots to put the home side in command.  Jeanes retired on 35 not out and Davenport (26) was well caught by Pither running to his left at long off from the bowling of Jeremy Budd (1-21) but there was no let up as Dave Tarr and C. Mowe continued the onslaught.  Mowe (17) attempted one pull shot too many and gently spooned the ball from Peter Reed (1-36) to Budd at short midwicket and Phil Barker (1-19) produced a peach of a ball to remove G.Heals.  Lucy Turner (10) top edged Ed Porter (1-11) to Nick Bray at cover but Tarr (37 n.o.) played brilliantly and was well supported by Mike Cook (15 n.o.).

For a while Doctors were up with the daunting asking rate as Pither and Keith Powell played well against the opening bowlers and dispatched any bad and some good balls to the boundary.  The match was effectively decided by a fine spell of fast bowling by another recent old boy G.Whittington (3-14) whose wickets included both Pither (23) and Powell (11).  Bray did not stay long in the middle but his cameo of 12 included one glorious straight six.  Thereafter only Barker (32 n.o.) showed the nous to stay in and pick up runs as Jeanes (2-2), Morgan (1-24) and Simon Hogg (1-21) were gifted easy wickets.
