Doctors beat Taunton School Staff by 4 wickets

Taunton School           102 for 3

Doctors                      103 for 6

The visitors made a very slow start on a damp, slow, low Cannington strip.  The pressure exerted by the tight bowling of Tom Adcock and Tom Guppy led to a breakthrough when Luke Waller (14) lofted Peter Reed (1-15) very high but not far enough, into the safe hands of Sam Powell at long off.  Lucy Turner (16), having offered three difficult catches which were all spurned was eventually bowled by Sam Powell.  Another wicket followed quickly when Powell (2-22) bowled Andrew Pring and it took spirited contributions from M.Kelly (33 n.o.) and R.Godfrey (21 n.o.) to get the teachers past the hundred mark.

Doctors’ reply began laboriously as Pring and Cyril Kelly bowled a tight line and each took two wickets.  The home side was rescued from the depths of 25 for 4 by a polished innings from Harry Lee which was tailored perfectly to the difficult batting conditions.  He received sterling support from Guppy but when Lee retired on 30 and Guppy was caught off Waller (1-18) there was still much to do.  Phil Barker made an invaluable 15, ended when he was caught off Godfrey (1-16) which set the stage for a commanding captain’s innings by Powell.  Godfrey is a fine bowler and had begun with a wicket maiden but Powell deposited him for two glorious straight sixes as part of a breath-taking knock of 29 n.o. off 13 balls.  Connor Keohane kept him company and, with 7 balls to spare, had the satisfaction of scoring the winning run with a fine off drive.
