Doctors beat Taunton Deane Council by 6 wickets

Taunton Deane 76 for 6

Doctors            77 for 4

As has been the case so often this year the match was played on a damp, low, slow wicket and, having suffered an early loss to a fine off cutter from the lively Matt House (1-5), Gareth Clifford and Ralph Willoughby-Foster opted for accumulation of ones and twos.  Sam Powell, Peter Reed and Jeremy Budd kept a tight stranglehold by taking the pace off the ball and the partnership was broken when Clifford (14) fell to a fine, diving catch by Rob Adcock at midwicket off Reed.  There was a mini collapse as Bruce Carpenter played on when trying a risky cut shot against Budd (1-12) and the dangerous Dave Sizer offered a half chance to gully off Reed (2-12) which was plucked out of the air by House.  Joe Bannister (12 n.o.) did his best to take the attack to the bowlers but Adcock (1-11) lured Willoughby-Foster (13) down the track to present an easy stumping to Graham Fergusson and attritional bowling from Nick Bray (1-5) created another chance which House accepted.

Steve Hughes struck an early blow to lift the Council’s hopes but aggressive driving by Justin Pepperell and Ed Johnson took back the initiative.  Pepperell (11) was bowled by Sizer (2-29) who also accounted for Fergusson, caught at extra cover and there was another blip when House was bowled by a fine inswinging yorker from Hughes (2-11).  Johnson (30 retired.) was the only man to make batting look easy and his barrage of boundaries put Doctors in an unassailable position from which Adcock (10 n.o.) and Richard Budd (11 n.o.) were able to finish the match with some comfort.
